The latest glimpse into the future of gaming at this week’s CES in Las Vegas comes courtesy of Microsoft’s IllumiRoom, which projects images and light into the room outside a TV screen.

Illumiroom uses Kinect and a projector to expand a game beyond the confines of the living room TV. Snow falls, fire skips across the floor, and environments fill the entire wall behind the big screen.
IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept Microsoft Research project designed to push the boundary of living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual and physical worlds with projected visualizations. The effects in the video are rendered in real time and are captured live -- not special effects added in post processing

Do you think this is great or just to much let me know what you think people.

For those worried about not having a vast and immaculate white-walled minimalist living room to be able to enjoy gaming on a grand scale, the demo quickly shows that the tech will self-callibrate to any kind of living room space using a projector that sits on your coffee table and works in conjunction with the Kinect system.

Once your room has been scanned, the Star Trek-style holodeck experience begins.

The effects range from simply expanding the gaming world on your TV screen to the walls of your living room, to shifting shafts of light altering in your room as you traverse a cityscape or jungle or objects tumbling out from the screen onto your floor.

We're also shown that the effects needn't relate directly to the game - snow falls and settles as an icy racing track is played on screen, or shock waves emanate across the room to enhance the recoil effect of a shotgun.

While IllumiRoom is still clearly marked as a proof of concept for now - and we’re yet to know more detail about whether this might be included with the new Xbox or sold as an optional peripheral - it does now seem much more likely that the tech will be available with the new Xbox console.
